Faith Formation classes start next weekend with Preschool on the 22nd, and then our Elementary and Middle school classes begin on Sept 25th, and High School on Sept 29th. As I signed up my children online, I reflected on my role as my children’s First Catechist, as is outlined in the Catechism:
Through the grace of the sacrament of marriage, parents receive the responsibility and privilege of evangelizing their children. Parents should initiate their children at an early age into the mysteries of the faith of which they are the “first heralds” for their children. …. Family catechesis precedes, accompanies, and enriches other forms of instruction in the faith. Parents have the mission of teaching their children to pray and to discover their vocation as children of God. The parish is the Eucharistic community and the heart of the liturgical life of Christian families; it is a privileged place for the catechesis of children and parents. (CCC 2225 - 2226)
The job of “First Catechist” can feel daunting at times. I am so grateful for the community here at St Andrew and the influence they have on my family and my faith. It is a place for our children to grow in faith, make friends, and find role models. It is a place for us as adults to grow in our faith, too, and learn how to share our faith with our families. As a cradle Catholic, I grew up in a time that “CCD” was more about feeling the love of God than understanding God’s love and what the Church teaches and why. As a result, I’ve wanted resources for myself to learn about my faith and prepare to share my faith with my inquisitive children. I have been grateful for our community here and for Fr. Jack in finding those resources and walking with me in faith.
The Catechism states: “Children contribute to the growth in holiness of their parents.” (CCC 2227) I look forward with anticipation to the opportunities for growth and catechesis for me and for my children in this new school year. I hope that your family also feels the connectedness of our parish family, too. Look for our opportunities during Faith Formation on Wednesday nights for you to grow in faith and continue to connect with other parents in this journey of faith.
